The Sprint 8830 is unlocked, regardless of what that screen says.
The link you posted doesn't really apply to hybrid devices, such as the 8830.

voice services are unlocked, i.e. the device will work with any GSM card OUTSIDE the U.S. (And i think outside North America). But in order to get BB service if you are traveling overseas you need to contact sprint, switch to the global data plan, and make sure that you have been switched

It's unlocked. There's nothing to debate about.
The post you referenced was from June. I don't even think the Sprint 8830 was released when that post was made.

hi im with telus and my 8830 says unknown

Sim unknown
network unknown
network subset unknown
service provider unknown
corporate unknown

so what does that mean?? and how do i get it to tell me what it really is? and if i call telus will they unlock it for me. I payed full price for the 8830

penguin3107 I just to buy one BB8830 from sprint, I'm not gonna use in USA I need it to use with Telcel in Mexico is a gift for my son.I put in sim card from Telcel but is not work, it get signal but I can't make calls.Do you think it really works??

You can not use the 8830 on GSM in North America. The 8830 GSM is for the 900/1800 GSM bands. North American uses 850/1900.

You can not use the 8830 in North America on GSM. Not possible.
