Default Alternative to removing the battery for reset

Please Login to Remove!

I have a BlackBerry 8830 on Sprint. Where I work, we actually have Sprint antennas inside our buildings, and I sit something like 30 feet from one.

I explain this because I have a recurring problem - I will lose my 1XEV. I don't have 1xev, I don't have 1X, I don't even have 1x. I have 5 bars, and no data.

I have tried reprovisioning, I have tried "Register Now" after reprovisioning. The only thing that reliably works is to pull the battery and replace it. 99.9999999999999999999999% of the time, after the reset, I have 1XEV. Then later on, I will end up losing data completely again.

I have called Sprint, and their best recommendation was the provision/register now thing.

So I am wondering, does anyone know of an alternative way to force a blackberry to reset OTHER than yanking the battery?

Or alternatively, is there another, better way to deal with losing your data "signal" other than resetting the blackberry?

Thanks,

-Verxion

I believe a soft reset can be done by pressing ALT + SHIFT + DEL. At least that works on my 8700g.

I had read that when I was doing some internet searches, but it doesn't work (for me anyway) on my 8830. :(

There is a program called softreset but I am not sure if it works for your model. You can search on it here. I think Metfan wrote it.

Awesome. The link for it is here:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/afte...set-pearl.html

And it works perfect on the 8830. I am going to post on the thread just to let people know it works on the 8830.

Thanks for the link!

The program is awesome! I was so sick of battery pulls! I am glad that it works on the 83XX! Sweet!

That used to do it. Now the first + + resets Radio only. When the screen returns from black and before you see any graphics or text, do + + again to do a real reset. If you don't get an hourglass for at least 30seconds, it wasn't a real reset. This functionality changed sometime during the 3.x to 4.x versions. Can't remember which.

bjgrim - that doesn't happen on my 8830. Alt+shift+del does nothing.

Right Cap button, not left. Had an 8830 from VZW in my hands today and had to reset it because a phone call had gotten hung. Make sure you hold them all down and in that order. It is possible the Sprint version is different, but unlikely as that is a pretty universal reset with the exception of the pearls.

There are some options under network that allow you to manually select your network. CDMA or GSM. Might be worth messing with. I only played with an 8830 for a few minutes, so I am not really familiar with it.

I sit corrected!

Left ALT, Right SHIFT, then DEL. After it comes back, repeat, it resets. Voila!

Thank you my good man!

Please know the difference--
Soft Reset = ALT, Right SHIFT, then DEL

Hard Reset = Battery Pull.

They are not the same thing, RIM distinguishes between the two items in their KB articles. For regaining a signal, the soft reset is adequate.

The FAQ here has recently been updated to include information of the RIM knowledge base.

Agreed, but there is very, very little difference between a double (has to be double) soft reset and a hard reset. I had this argument with a level 1 RIM tech on one occasion. I think the reason they tout the hard line stance on it is that the average person has a hard time with the timing and it is just easier to say pull the battery out. I explain it to my folks as follows.

Soft reset is like turning off your wifi and turning it back on.
Double soft reset is like restarting windows
hard reset is like pulling out the power cable to your computer

(I was in Chattanooga last weekend.)

I understand why you feel that way, but of course that is your opinion, and at least RIM does specifically state a difference in the two in all their knowledge base articles. If they thought there was problem with the average person's timing with a soft reset, why would they mention it so often in opposition to a hard (battery pull) reset?

And I may be wrong, but I don't see anything anywhere on RIM about a double soft serve reset.

It would just be good to establish some standards, and that is why I put the link to the FAQ site article, which is almost verbatim from the RIM KB article. Pulling a power cable on a PC is quite different than restarting windows.

I do understand what you are saying though, I can appreciate it.

Thumbs up ALT-SHIFT-DEL Works on Sprint 8830!

I was reading through these posts and decided to try the ALT-SHIFT-DEL combination on my Sprint 8830. Suddenly! My device just rebooted. Specifically, I pressed the ALT-RIGHT SHIFT KEY-and then the DEL key. Worked beautifully.

Have a great day.

Maybe I didn't explain properly. Was in a hurry. I meant that RIM doesn't train their people or acknowledge a double soft reset. (Try it and you will see what I mean. It exists. ) I think the reason they don't is that it is just easier to talk people through a hard reset and it accomplishes the same thing.

After you test it, I'm looking forward to seeing the double soft reset in the FAQ

The PC analogies are just that analogies. They are meant not to be over analyzed. They are for noobs

PM me if you are going to be in Chattanooga again anytime soon. I work downtown. We could hook up for lunch. Dutch of course.

I agree with Bjgrim on the double soft reset being essentially interchangeable with a hard reset. I've been using it for several years, and it's the functional equivalent when you need to bail from an errant program, install an OTA program, or recover lost memory (only the BB kind, regrettably).

The trick is timing the two resets just right -- as soon as you see the desktop screen return, quickly do the second reset. You'll know you've succeeded if takes as long to reboot as it would have taken using a hard reset.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8830: BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/104)

I can also confirm the double soft reset. This is an exceedingly useful tidbit of info!
