Default To Sheath Or Not To Sheath

Please Login to Remove!

With apologies if this has already been discussed ... I did a little searching and didn't see it ...

I just got a Pearl to replace my 7100. Wondering whether I should use the holster at all, as it adds considerable bulk. Concerned about it from two standpoints:

1) Scratching. Screen and camera lens.
2) Functionality. Sleep mode, etc.

What says the brain trust?

If you dont want the bulk of a holster than you might want to consider something like Best Skins Ever Home Page. Very cheap, good protection, and does not effect the function of the device what so ever.

Notwithstanding your asking the brain trust, I will respond anyway!

Sheath it. The sleep function saves battery. I have never "lost" a BB because because it is always on my hip or in front of my face or laying on my desk in front of me. Pocket lint plays heck on a trackball.

Now let's see what the brain trust says.

Thanks Doug.

That is the very thin plastic skin? Have you used it? It doesn't make it hard to push buttons?

JSanders thanks. Dusty trackball notwithstanding, doesn't the Backlight Timeout achieve the same battery savings as the holster?

Actually the holster has the magnet that actually puts the BB to sleep differently than the backlight simply going off.

All that said, there are a great number of people who would never use a holster. My wife rarely does with her 8100, just drops it in her purse, and she has not had problems. She keeps a good screen guard on it which saves the screen from scratching. Once in a while, I see her holster clipped inside her purse with the BB in it.

People who use the BSE swear by them, no difficulty pushing buttons.

Is scratching the camera lens worth worrying about?

I'm in this camp as well. I love the skin. It has given my Pearl great protection without adding any sort of bulk. Highly recommended!

I use the RIM leather pouch and love it. I have a screen protector (Seidio hard plastic-no scratches in a year). Goes in my pocket, little bulk, covers the device (except top of course), easy to whip out and has sleep magnet. I love it, and I think it's about $9 now. Check it out. My wife has the Seidio rubberized case and she's about to switch after seeing my pouch in action.

Newt, I take it you are not referring to the leather pouch that came with the Pearl?

No, one I got on Amazon made by RIM. I think it's called the Rim leather pouch. Retail was like $30 but they can be had a lot cheaper nowdays. I have the slightly larger Seidio battery (not the biggest one) and that fits fine. (did the Pearl even come with a pouch? I don't remember.

Wirelessly posted (blackberry pearl: BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/160)

I skinned mine for about a day then got rid of it because I wasn't a fan. It was alright for the phone but I hated it on my screen. Personal preference I guess but reading rainbow is on so I have to go watch that now.

Thanks Newt I will check it out. Yes, a leather pouch was included with all the gizmos that came with the Pearl.

No skin, no pouch, use the standby mode button on top. I like mine nakid! Don't be scared, the Pearl 2 will be out soon anyway replacing my Pearl.

I have a Best Skin Ever on the front of mine, cannot recommend this highly enough. Great product.

I never used any other kind of case or holster or clip. I tried the rubber sleeve things, and it makes it very difficult to get the phone in and out of my front pocket.

That is the advantage of the 8100, just carries in your front pocket.

jonpwil you use just the screen skin? Not the full body skin? Any issues with scratching the camera lens?

I'm terrible.....unprotected texting, email, phone calls and browser....ALL the time...it just feels better... I do keep it in my pocket so cleaning the trackball is a must about once a month for the lint.

Seriously, I guess I just view it like the dash and seat covers on a car. Why do I want to cover up the beautiful new dash or seats with something cheap to keep it nice for someone else when I sell it! I haven't dropped it and actually it's still in great shape!

I actually purchased a BSE but never put it on. I had read that the edges can curl a little and sometimes get sticky picking up lint, etc. Since I keep it in my suit pocket I said no...
