Default Tethering Storm

Please Login to Remove!

Hello everyone! I would appreciate any assistance with tethering my storm to a HP Pavilion DV8000 laptop, XP SP3. I have spent over 2 1/2 hours on the phone with verizon and did not help at all! I installed the desktop mgr 4.7 software, usb drivers and vzacess software but for whatever reason the vzaccess will not detect the phone - error msg "Can't find wireless phone.... etc.... com port not available"

Also, in device manager a standard modem was not installed as part of the above setup and neither was the RIM virtual serial port. however, under usb controllers the blackberry smartphone is listed without any exclamations.

I have tried to manually add the modem, but laptop will not allow.

My laptop does not have any physical com or lpt ports. i do have an internal modem using com 3 and it is working (tested).

Windows detects the bb and i can see the sd card and the device memory - assigns drive letters in my computer so device is working with usb drivers. desktop mgr 4.7 software also recognized bb.

I have subscribed to the tethering service thru verizon and I also confirmed that it is turned on.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled software, tried different versions. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!!

I know that the problem lies with the laptop - I can tether successfully on a desktop computer with the storm.

You have to be running the BB Device Manager (not Desktop Manager). It sounds like you don't have that running.

You don't need VZAccess Manager.

Once the BB Device Manager is running and the BB is hooked up. You can use the Windows Dial-up Networking Wizard to create your dial-up connection. Search for prior posts from me for details, if you need them.

For whatever it is worth, I had just about the same problem about 8 weeks back. In my case my wife's phone would tether just fine and mine would not. I spent countless hours on the phone with VZW tech staff, plus reading quite a few instructions that I downloaded. Nothing seemed to work.

After posting my problem in one of the forums, a kind soul suggested doing a battery pull and waiting 30 seconds before putting it back in and turning the phone back on.

Well, wouldn't you know it, it worked!

I am not sure if this will solve your issues, but it is worth a try.

Best of luck!

does anyone kmow if mobishark will work without paying for the tethering plan? and if i decide to buy the plan. i've heard there is a cap on internet usage?

it's bull to pay 30 dollars on top of the 30 i'm already paying with verizon blackberry. i was only paying 15 dollars before i switched over to verizon and it was completely unlimited and allowed tethering.

Get TetherBerry. I've been using it for 2 weeks. I dropped the tethering option from my VZW account after 1 days with TB and have had no regrets.

Thanks, that took care of my problem. I've been messing with it for 2 days after it stopped working. My storm rebooted itself several times, so I figured that a battery pull would be redundant, but it worked!!!

There is a difference between battery pull and reboot.

You don't need VZ Manager. But you do need the Blackberry Desktop Manager installed. Installing that installs the Blackberry Device Manager and the related (and required) USB drivers.

For T-mobile, when you open the dial up, leave the user and password blank. in the dial, put in *99#

It should work. good luck!

If you want to go through VZW dial *228 to update your phone. Then it should work. That is what I had to do, but like most I dropped that part of the plan and went with tetherberry.

so im guessing it tricks verizon into thinking your blackberry is just using its browser instead of the laptop using it? When I tethered without getting the plan from verizon, my storm automatically went in modem mode and the dollar signs started rolling... if this is the case then i'll spend the $50 to buy tetherberry right now
