I may be a big dummy, but I just found out TODAY after 2 years of Blackberry use (7230, 7100t, 8700t) that the person CALLING you can TELL if you are ignoring their calls.

Let me explain that further:

The second you click 'ignore' it goes to voicemail. So anyone who knows anything about Blackberries will know that if it doesn't go right to voicemail quickly, but then it does after a ring or two, is ignoring your calls.

I thought that once you clicked ignore, it silenced the ringer, and then went to voicemail in usual fashion after a fixed number of rings.

WRONG.

This is a precarious problem that I guess I thought more people would have a problem with. A sensative client left me a voicemail saying "I know you are clicking ignore because I have a Blackberry too" I would have preferred he just thought I was busy and unable to get to the phone answer, but by clicking ignore, he knows that it is ringing and that I'm physically clicking ignore.

Isn't there a way to preserve your privacy when it comes to this stuff?

1. Can't let it ring until voicemail... too disruptive
2. Can't turn radio off, would miss calls I want to take

um thats not just with blackberry but with any carrier/phone.

Normally a phone will ring 4 times before it goes to voicemail (unless you extended the ring time) and that is about 21 seconds of ringing. If you hit answer, you obviously answer immediately, but if you hit ignore (end/red button) it would send it to voicemail. I've noticed this on just about every carrier. It has nothing to do with your phone, and there isn't and option on your phone. I would call your carrier and see if they have any options for you.

Moving the scroll wheel on your blackberry should mute the blackberry while its ringing. I could be wrong on this. You can always use profiles. Switch up profiles when you are busy and don't want phone calls, switch it to vibrate or silent/off.

And your client doesn't sound very "mature" IMO. I hit the ignore button all the time, people should know, if your busy your busy, if you can't answer, you can't answer and the fastest way to mute your phone is to hit the ignore button. That should give them the message that you can not answer if they get sent straight to voicemail. And saying "I know cause I have a blackberry too?"

In a way, I think sending it to voicemail is more benificial. If it goes straight to voicemail people should get the idea that you saw the call and hand to ignore it cause you are in a meeting or something important at the moment. If it rings 4 times and goes to voicemail, people will prob call again thinking you didn't hear the phone, its on vibrate or that your not near your phone so they'll call again till you answer. Then again sending it to voicemail can have the same effect cause people might think you don't have service or something cause it rings twice.

Turning this around, I like the fact that I can let someone know that I am ignoring them by sending the call to voicemail after a couple of rings. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Yes spinning the scroll wheel works, and this just came to me, what about the mute button on the top an 8700? Anyone know if that will mute the ringer rather then ignore?

I ignore my wifes calls all the time. She knows that if I can't pickup right when she calls I will call back when I can. I use vibrate for all phone calls so it is not as disruptive as a ringtone. Do the people calling you actually expect you to drop everything to answer their call regardless of what your doing?

I agree with BallHawk3, your client needs to get a life! Nonetheless, I've tested a few options, and there is NO way around it - till now, I've NEVER thought about it...

I TOTALLY forgot with 4.1 and thte 8700 I could create an exception for and set it to 'quiet' that will solve it. doh!

HOWEVER

I just think its a bit misleading when it says 'ignore' instead of 'send to voicemail'

that would be better IMHO.

for me, it does nuttin but do the "mute" beep but the phone keeps ringing.

Turn your dial from main screen option off, and then try it again...

This is a function of GSM networks. In this case, the phone tells the network (switch) that the phone isn't taking the call and the call is sent to its next destination, usually voicemail. In CDMA networks, this signalling doesn't occur from the handset to the network upon call rejection.

First off, I have to agree with the other people who say this has nothing to do with the BlackBerry, it is a feature of every phone. Secondly, I have found the best answer to this is what message you record on your voicemail greeting. I make it quite clear in my voicemail greeting that I am not answering my phone because I am not able at the moment.

I have never had anyone, even the most over-sensitive actor or artist, complain about me sending them to voicemail, because I make it quite clear in my greeting that if I could answer the phone, I would. Besides, it goes both ways. They love it when I am having a meeting with them, and send someone else to voicemail, because it makes them feel important.
