Default Gmail speed, really fast??

Please Login to Remove!

So I subscribed to my Gmail account using my blackberry pearl, having it check my gmail via POP. I was expecting (as advertised) that the blackberry would update every 15 minutes after polling, but I noticed that I was getting email a lot quicker than that. So I did a few experiments sending myself email from gmail on my PC. Apparently it takes about *10 seconds* for my blackberry to notify me that I have new email on my gmail account?

I'm not complaining, but I'm just wondering why it is so fast? It can't be using POP, right?

GMail and Yahoo accounts use special kind of integration with RIM's servers:

Gmail and Yahoo push emails from them to RIM.
RIM pushes emails to blackberries.

This eliminates 10-15 minutes polling interval.

Gmail email is received on my BB with 5 to 10 seconds after sent. This is a great thing.

same thing happens with Yahoo mail also. I get it on the device even before it shows up in my account.

It was a different story with Cingular BB service though, there (7130c) it would take about 2-4 minutes for gmail and forget yahoo mail (greedy Cingular!).

I believe the PUSH Gmail feature was activated when carriers switched to BIS 2.1

Your carrier may not be on 2.1 yet, so you still have to wait the 15 minutes, unless you have it forwarded to your blackberry email address.

That way works, or with TMO you can just enter your Gmail account info into the BIS email setup page and it should work just fine by itself.

Every BIS2 account has fast GMail delivery. Does not matter what carrier.

If you have GMail address added to your account long, long time ago and you are positive it is 15 minutes polling you must delete GMail address from your BIS2 blackberry account and add it back to switch to fast delivery.

If it does not help make sure you are using BIS2 and not BIS1.8.

You can create a filter to prevent this from happening.
